Free Mindfulness Taster Session with Annie Akasati McAuley

  • The Open Door, Church Twitten 32 High Street Lewes, England, BN7 2LU United Kingdom (map)

Mindfulness is the quality of present-moment awareness, for example when are happily absorbed in a simple task, or pause to notice a beautiful sunset. In a way it is quite simple, but that doesn't mean it is easy to do! Most of us can benefit from training ourselves to be more fully present and focused, gradually learning this skill, through practice and with support from the mindfulness trainer and other, like-minded people on the course. The benefits of mindfulness practice are widely reported in the media, including the capacity to increase our wellbeing, calmness and clarity - and reducing stress, anxiety, low mood and likelihood of relapse into depression.

I initially learned mindfulness and meditation in a Buddhist context in the 1980's and have practiced regularly since that time. This practice has been the source of much creativity and joy throughout my adult life. I completed ordination training in Buddhist philosophy and practice in 1999, at which time I was given my Buddhist name 'Akasati'. Since then have regularly led meditation courses and retreats, initially within a Buddhist context and more recently leading secular mindfulness and compassion courses.

I have been practising mindfulness and meditation for over 35 years and have now taught over 30 8-week mindfulness courses. I am a member of the UK Mindfulness Network and am qualified to teach Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and alternate these two courses at The Open Door. I am also qualified to teach Mindfulness-based Compassionate Living (MBCL). Together with my colleague Dr Carolyn Drake and associate teacher Nicky Mouat, I run a Mindfulness teaching partnership 'Love Mindfulness'.
