Learn how to make biochar – a special kind of eco-friendly charcoal that can be added to soil to boost its fertility and lock in dangerous carbon emissions – in this hands-on workshop.

What’s involved?

All participants will spend the day making a batch of biochar. Led by our founder, Phil Greenwood, they will fill and run the Sacred Earth kiln with some of the wood off-cuts left over from coppicing and pollarding our biodynamic woodland.

During this activity, Phil will talk about:

• The history of biochar and how it was first used to enhance soil fertility in the jungles of the Amazon thousands of years ago

• The principles of soil health

• The special kind of kiln needed to make biochar

• How to set up and run the kiln, with detailed information on temperature and timings

• How to source the natural wood off-cuts and biomass needed to make biochar

• How to recognise high quality biochar

• What biochar does for the soil – and for the environment, in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions

• What he adds to the biochar to create the most potent soil food possible

Making leather belts and bags

Join designer and craftsman Mark Gilbert for an introduction to making hard wearing leather belts and bags. A day workshop that will take you step by step through the practical and creative process of making useful objects out of leather.

Overview

We will begin at 10am in the yurt where we will begin with introductions and intentions for the day. After which participants will be able to see and feel examples of a range of leather working projects that can be used as inspiration and as reference throughout the day. Then participants will design and make a leather belt and then move onto the creation of a small leather bag. Mark’s aim is the create a relaxed and friendly environment in order to promote creativity, questions and discussion.

Who is the workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for any adult that has an interest in learning some basic techniques for joining leather while crafting in a small group. Through the course of the day Mark will guide and support participants to design and make a leather belt and a leather bag which they will take away with them at the end of the workshop.

Practical information

Although the yurt boasts a log burning stove please bring warm clothing and practical footwear. The leather making will occur on the wooden floor of the yurt, however if you prefer to sit while you craft then you are more than welcome to bring a portable camping type chair. Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day but lunch will not be provided. Please bring a bottle for drinking water, snacks and something to share for lunch.

Free parking is available at the Hillside Drive car park in Horam. It is a pleasant twenty minute walk along the Cuckoo Trail from Horam to the site. The walk offers a perfect way to begin decompressing before you arrive. Please contact the workshop organiser (details below) if you have access needs which require you to park closer.

Flint knapping is the prehistoric art of shaping flint through a gradual process of lithic reduction to create arrow heads, knife blades and other stone tools.

Join master flint knapper Feathers for a fun and fascinating day exploring this ancient art and develop a skill which requires both embodiment and intentionality.

Overview

By the end of the day you will be sure to have crafted into being an arrow head, a rough tool or even a working blade. Both larger flint and smaller more delicate work will be explored. We look at pressure flaking, platform preparation, shaping and general usages.

Who is the workshop for?

A great introduction to the art of flint knapping, this workshop is suitable for beginner and intermediate flint knappers alike. Feathers will be providing expert one to one tuition so wherever you are on your flint knapping journey, you’ll find this workshop useful, challenging and enjoyable.

Practical information

The cost of this workshop is £65, including all tools, teaching and materials. Please bring warm clothing and practical footwear. Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day but lunch will not be provided. Please bring a bottle for drinking water, snacks and something vegetarian to share for lunch, or your own packed lunch if you’d prefer not to share.
